# What is Token?

A small chunk of text, often a short word or a piece of a longer one, that a large language model reads and writes. AI tools count length and limits in tokens; these are not login or access tokens.

## In real work

When the chat said the city's parks plan was too long, her son explained the tool counts text in tokens and can only take in so many at once, so she sent one chapter at a time.
