# What is Trigger?

The event that starts an automation, such as a form being submitted, a new row appearing in a spreadsheet, or a set time arriving. You pick it first, then choose the steps that follow.

## In real work

In Zapier, the trigger is a new row in the sign-up spreadsheet, and the next step posts that volunteer's name in the #welcome channel in Slack.
