ADAS
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. Sensors and software that warn the driver or briefly take over steering, braking, or acceleration to reduce collisions.
Sensor Fusion
Combining data from multiple sensors (camera, radar, lidar) to build one reliable picture of the environment.
Perception Stack
The pipeline that turns raw sensor data into objects, lanes, and obstacles the vehicle can reason about.
Domain Controller
A centralized compute unit that runs multiple ADAS functions together, replacing many separate ECUs.
Driving Automation Level
SAE J3016 levels 0 to 5. They describe how much driving automation handles versus the human driver.
Automatic Emergency Braking
A system that detects an imminent frontal collision and applies the brakes if the driver does not react in time.
Responsibility-Sensitive Safety
A formal model defining safe distances and behaviors an autonomous system must maintain around other road users.
Digital Twin
A virtual replica of a physical product or process, fed with real data to simulate, monitor, and optimize behavior.
Hardware-in-the-Loop
Testing that runs real ECU hardware against a simulated vehicle and environment in real time.
Software-in-the-Loop
Running control software in simulation without physical hardware, to iterate quickly on logic and edge cases.
Sim-to-Real Gap
The difference between how a model behaves in simulation versus on the real vehicle or track.
Cyber-Physical System
A system where software, sensors, and physical components continuously interact and exchange data.
Simultaneous Engineering
Running design, simulation, and manufacturing planning in parallel instead of strict waterfall handoffs.
Digital Thread
A connected data chain linking design, simulation, manufacturing, and service records for one product.
Software-Defined Vehicle
A vehicle whose features and behavior are mostly controlled by software that can be updated after sale.
ECU
Electronic Control Unit. An embedded computer that runs firmware for one vehicle function or domain.
OTA Update
Over-the-air delivery of firmware or software to vehicles via cellular or Wi-Fi without a workshop visit.
V2X
Vehicle-to-everything communication. It links cars with infrastructure, other vehicles, and cloud services.
E/E Architecture
The layout of electrical and electronic systems across the vehicle: wiring, networks, and compute.
Vehicle OS
The software platform that hosts in-vehicle apps, services, and middleware across domains.
Over-the-Air Diagnostics
Remotely pulling logs, fault codes, and health data from vehicles in the field without a service bay visit.
Telemetry
Streaming measurement data from vehicles or test rigs. Speed, temperatures, voltages, and similar signals sent to storage for analysis.
CAN Bus
Controller Area Network. A robust vehicle bus that lets ECUs exchange messages without a central host.
Edge Inference
Running a machine learning model on the vehicle or local gateway instead of sending raw data to the cloud.
Predictive Maintenance
Using data and models to forecast component failure before breakdown, so service can be scheduled early.
Anomaly Detection
Finding unusual patterns in data that may signal faults, fraud, or new edge cases worth investigating.
Time-Series Forecasting
Predicting future values from past measurements over time. Used for temperature curves, wear rates, and demand.
Sensor Calibration
Aligning cameras, radar, or lidar so measured positions match the real world after install or repair.
Functional Safety
Engineering discipline that ensures systems fail in a controlled way. ISO 26262 is the key automotive standard.
ADAS Calibration
Procedure to realign ADAS sensors after repair, wheel alignment, or suspension work so warnings stay accurate.
Vision Inspection
Using cameras and often AI to detect surface defects, misalignment, or missing parts on the production line.
Class A Surface
Exterior body panels visible to the customer. Held to the strictest cosmetic quality standard.
Industry 5.0
Manufacturing vision that pairs human skill with automation and AI. Focus on collaboration, not replacement only.
Tier-1 Supplier
A direct supplier to the OEM. They deliver batteries, ADAS modules, interiors, and other integrated subsystems for the vehicle program.
End-of-Line Testing
Final validation on the production line before a vehicle ships. Checks functions, leaks, and calibration status.
